Royal Blue Grass Rug
This royal blue grass rug was hand double knotted in India, with a New Zealand wool base, and measures 437 x 304 cm, about 13.3 square metres of floor. Its colour is a deep, muted blue, closer to navy and slate than to a bright royal blue, with flecks of white and grey blue that lift the tone. It is a plain, textured piece for a contemporary room.
The royal blue grass rug up close
The surface is made of mottled horizontal bands, with darker navy stripes alternating with paler grey blue ones. Fine white flecks run through the whole field, so the blue looks textured rather than flat. Up close the stripes show a small dotted texture in each band, and from across the room they settle into one even, deep tone. The edges are plain, with no contrasting border, and the rug has no central motif or medallion. It lies flat on a plain floor.
Where it comes from
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, and Indian rugs in this style are often made to order in a wide range of colours and sizes. This royal blue grass rug fits that contemporary group, and its plain, textured field suits a calm room.
How it is made
Hand knotting means each knot in this royal blue grass rug is tied by hand onto the warp threads of the loom, row after row, and the pile is then trimmed to an even height. Double knotting ties each knot around two warp threads. Turn the rug over and the knots show on the back as a fine, slightly uneven texture, typical of hand work. Its base is New Zealand wool, and the blue and white flecks are set into it knot by knot.
Sizing it for your room
At 437 x 304 cm this royal blue grass rug covers about 13.3 square metres, so it suits a large living room. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves roughly 108 cm of rug showing past each end, and armchairs facing the sofa can rest their front legs on it. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, it leaves about 99 cm at each end and 102 cm along each side, enough for chairs to slide back. Its deep navy tones sit well with grey or white walls and timber floors.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum this royal blue grass rug on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths favour dark, quiet spots, such as the area under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
