Red Kashan Goli Rug
This red Kashan Goli rug was hand knotted in Iran in wool and measures 373 x 250 cm, or about 9.3 square metres. Its deep red field is covered in flowers and vines, and a dark navy border with cream and gold detail frames it. A navy and cream medallion sits at the centre, with cream pieces in the corners.
The design up close
The medallion is lozenge shaped, with navy outlines and a cream centre filled with small blue and green motifs. Curving stems and blossoms spread from it across the red field in cream, blue, gold and green. Navy and cream corner pieces frame the field at each corner.
The field is busy but evenly spread, with small rosettes, leaves and buds packed close together. Around it sits a band of navy with cream and gold vines between narrow guard lines in cream and light blue. The outer border is the widest part of this red kashan goli rug, a navy band covered in flowers and vines in gold, cream, red and blue.
This red Kashan Goli rug keeps the medallion, corners and borders in clear layers, so the eye moves from the centre out to the edge.
Kashan and its rugs
Kashan, in central Iran, is admired for its rugs, many of them in deep reds and blues with graceful central medallions. Among our handmade traditional rugs, Kashan pieces follow the classic layout of a central medallion with matching corner pieces, set in a field of flowers and vines and framed by several borders.
How it is made
Our records note that this rug is hand knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, with very fine knots. Kashan rugs are usually finely knotted with the asymmetrical (Persian) knot, which gives a short, dense pile that shows the detail clearly. This red Kashan Goli rug is one of our handmade traditional rugs, and each knot is tied by hand on the loom.
Sizing a red Kashan Goli rug for your room
At 373 x 250 cm the rug covers about 9.3 square metres. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m sits along its length with roughly 76.5 cm of rug showing past each end. In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm (eight seats) leaves 66.5 cm of rug at each end and 75 cm along each long side, so chairs can be pulled out and stay on the rug.
The deep red suits timber floors and cream or grey walls, and it works with both traditional and modern furniture.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
