Red Black Textured Rug
This red black textured rug was made in India from wool and silk, and it measures 417 x 305 cm. Its field is a warm rust red with a fine ribbed surface and almost no motif, so the texture is what you notice first. Our records note vegetable dyes.
The design up close
The rug is almost plain. Across the rust-red field, fine horizontal ribs and small dashes in a slightly darker red give a soft, grassy texture. The colour shifts gently from paler tones near the top to deeper rust through the lower half, as if the surface has been lightly brushed.
The rib direction runs across the width of the rug, so from a distance the surface reads as one flat tone, and up close it shows fine lines.
A single thin line runs down the right side, set in from the edge. Apart from that line there are no medallions or repeats, so the rug works as a quiet piece of texture on the floor. On this red black textured rug the surface changes subtly as light moves across it.
Indian rugs and their weaving
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian rugs in our collection lean towards contemporary and designer pieces, and Indian workshops weave many modern designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. This red black textured rug mixes wool with silk, one of the wool and silk blends in our Indian collection.
Wool, silk and the surface
Wool is the most common pile in Indian rugs. This red black textured rug pairs wool with silk, and its ribbed finish runs across the whole surface. Its colour is even across most of the field, with only a slightly paler band near the top edge.
Sizing a red black textured rug
At 417 x 305 cm the rug covers about 12.7 square metres. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves about 99 cm of rug showing past each end, so the sofa and two armchairs can sit on it around a coffee table. In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm leaves roughly 89 cm of rug at each end and 103 cm along each side. A plain field like this suits a room with patterned art or cushions, since nothing competes with them, and it works just as well under a busy set of furniture.
Looking after your red black textured rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then. Rubbing spills can dull silk, and this rug needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand.
