Red Black Rainbow Rug
This red black rainbow rug is a hand double knotted rug from India, measuring 435 x 306 cm, about 13.3 square metres. Its field runs in horizontal bands of brick red and near black, with grey flecks in the dark bands, so the colour changes from top to bottom rather than sitting in one motif.
The design of this red black rainbow rug
The rug has no motif and no border. The top band is a brick red with darker threads through it, and below that a charcoal and brown band with pale grey flecks. The middle of the field returns to a deeper red, and another dark band sits in the lower part before a brighter red band runs to the bottom edge.
Up close, the surface is covered in fine horizontal streaks, so the colour shifts from one row to the next. Where the red sits beside the black, the edge is soft rather than sharp. The short ends carry a fringe, and the long sides are plain.
Indian rugs and their weaving centres
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, and Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century. The Bhadohi and Mirzapur area in Uttar Pradesh is the largest carpet-making region in India. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. This rug fits that contemporary side of our Indian rugs, with its bands of colour rather than a traditional medallion.
How it is made
This rug is hand double knotted, so each knot is tied by hand on the loom and the pile is trimmed level afterwards. The pile of this red black rainbow rug is close and even across the field, so the bands read as steady blocks of colour when you stand back.
Sizing it for your room
At 435 x 306 cm the rug covers about 13.3 square metres. Under a sofa of around 2.2 m, about 107 cm of rug shows past each end, so a full lounge setting fits on it. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug shows roughly 97 cm at each end and 103 cm along each side.
For a table of about 180 x 90 cm with six chairs, the margins grow to about 127 cm at each end and 108 cm along each side. This red black rainbow rug suits warm timber, cream or grey walls and simple furniture, so the red bands stand out without competing with a busy room.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths favour dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
