Pistachio Kashan Persian Rug
This pistachio Kashan Persian rug was hand knotted in Iran from handspun lamb’s wool and measures 400 x 300 cm, about 12.0 square metres. The field is a pale ivory with a faint greenish yellow cast, and the drawing is picked out in soft blue, slate, muted rose and olive. Our records note vegetable dyes.
The pistachio Kashan Persian rug up close
A dense all-over pattern of vines, flower heads and small blossoms covers the ivory ground. Palmette-like flowers in soft blue and slate sit beside rosettes in muted rose and olive, with touches of gold in the centres. Down the middle, a column of medallions in slightly darker tones gives the field a subtle axis, though the drawing is so even that no single motif dominates.
A broad sand-coloured outer border carries a scrolling vine of palmettes and rosettes. Thin dark guard stripes and a narrow pale band separate it from the ivory field, so the border frames the field without competing with it. Lay this pistachio Kashan Persian rug where daylight reaches the pale ground, and the blue and rose drawing will stand out against it.
Kashan and its rugs
Kashan lies between Tehran and Isfahan in central Iran, and its workshops were well known by the 16th and 17th centuries, when Persian court carpets reached their height. Kashan rugs are admired for deep reds and navy blues, curving floral borders and a graceful central medallion. This pistachio Kashan Persian rug keeps the field of flowers and vines framed by several borders, but its ivory ground makes it much lighter than the deep red pieces Kashan is best known for.
How a Kashan rug is knotted
Kashan rugs are usually finely knotted with the asymmetrical Persian knot, on a cotton foundation, with a short, dense pile that shows the detail clearly. Many Kashans use soft, lustrous wool, and this one is lamb’s wool that was handspun before weaving. Each knot is tied by hand, so the outline of every flower shows the small variations that hand work leaves behind.
Sizing it for your room
This 400 x 300 rug covers about 12.0 square metres and is large enough for a full lounge setting. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves roughly 90 cm of rug showing past each end, and the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs can rest on the rug around a coffee table. In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm for eight seats leaves 80 cm of rug at each end and 100 cm along each side, which gives chairs room to slide back without leaving the rug.
The soft ivory suits pale timber floors and white or grey walls.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath the pistachio Kashan Persian rug. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
Because the ivory ground is pale, marks show sooner, so deal with spills straight away.
