Pink Gold Contemporary Rug
This pink gold contemporary rug was double hand knotted in Agra, India, in wool and measures 310 x 200 cm. Its field is a soft grey taupe with a hint of mauve, broken into fine horizontal bands. At about 6.2 square metres it suits a living room or a bedroom.
The design up close
The rug has no central motif and no border of its own. Instead, fine bands run from the top of the rug to the bottom, and each band is filled with tiny dots and small squares in grey, taupe and muted mauve. The bands sit close together, so the surface reads as one soft texture rather than separate rows.
Up close, the small squares line up in short runs that look like woven fabric, and the mix of grey and taupe shifts slightly from band to band. The palest bands sit beside the darkest ones, so there is still light and shade along the length of the rug. Short fringe finishes the top and bottom ends. From a little distance the rug looks almost plain, which makes it a calm backdrop for furniture in stronger colours.
Indian rugs and their design
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, and Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century. Indian workshops weave many contemporary and modern designs in a wide range of colours and sizes, and this pink gold contemporary rug follows that modern direction with a texture-led pattern instead of motifs. Its narrow colour range depends on subtle changes in tone, so the rug reads most clearly in natural light.
How a pink gold contemporary rug is made
This rug is double hand knotted, with each knot tied by hand on a loom. Because each dot and square is formed by individual knots, the texture is built into the rug and not printed on top.
Sizing a pink gold contemporary rug in your home
At 310 x 200 cm the rug covers about 6.2 square metres. That is a practical size for a living room with a two-seat sofa and a coffee table. Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, it leaves roughly 65 cm at each end and 55 cm along each side, enough room for chairs to slide back. In a living room, a three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 45 cm of rug showing past each end, so the front legs of the sofa sit well inside the edge.
A pink gold contemporary rug suits timber floors, white or pale walls and contemporary furniture in grey, cream or muted tones.
Looking after your pink gold contemporary rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
