Pink Contemporary Wool Rug
This pink contemporary wool rug was hand knotted in Agra, India, and measures 437 x 311 cm, about 13.6 square metres. Its surface moves from cerise and magenta at the top and in the lower third to a grey-lilac band through the middle, with a fine textured weave across the whole rug.
The design up close
There is no medallion and no border, so the colour does the work. Two broad bands of cerise pink sit near the top and in the lower third of this pink contemporary wool rug, and a grey-lilac band with a faint blue-grey tone runs between them. Where the lilac band meets the pink, the colours blend gradually. The lower cerise band looks deeper in tone than the upper one, so the pink feels heavier at the foot of the rug.
Across the grey band a row of small diamonds and zigzags in grey and teal shows faintly, closer to texture than pattern. Short fringe runs along the top and bottom edges, and the side edges are plain.
Indian hand knotted rugs in a contemporary style
Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century, and Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. Indian hand knotted rugs like this one follow that contemporary direction, with a plain field and gentle tonal changes. A plain field like this suits a room with patterned curtains or cushions, because the rug does not compete with them.
How it is made
This pink contemporary wool rug is double hand knotted, and our records note vegetable dyes. The pile is wool, and each knot is tied by hand on a loom. The surface stays even across the full width, so the textured look runs edge to edge.
Sizing this pink contemporary wool rug
At 437 x 311 cm, this pink contemporary wool rug covers about 13.6 square metres, which is large enough for a formal living room. A sofa and two armchairs can all sit on it around a coffee table, which anchors the sitting area and leaves a border of timber floor around the edges. For an eight-seat dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves roughly 98 cm at each end and about 105 cm along each side, so the whole table sits on the rug.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
