Handmade Pink and Grey Rainbow Rug
The Raspberry Haze rug is a pink and grey rainbow rug, handmade in India from wool and cotton and measuring 313 x 243 cm. It covers about 7.6 square metres. It is a modern rug with an ombre of raspberry pink, lilac and grey blue.
The design up close
Wide bands of colour cross the rug from side to side and fade into each other: raspberry and deep pink, then dusty rose and lilac, then a soft grey blue, and back again. The change is gradual, like an ombre, so there are no hard stripes, only warmer and cooler zones along the length.
Within the bands sits a fine diamond lattice of small pink diamonds outlined in grey blue. It is clearest where the grey is strongest and fades into the raspberry areas. The surface has a pebbly, slightly streaky texture, with flecks of white and pale pink that keep the colour lively. Both ends finish in a white fringe and there is no border.
This rainbow rug brings a lot of colour to a plain room. Pair it with white, grey or charcoal furniture, pale timber floors and brass or black metal, and let the pink do the work.
Indian weaving and this rug
India has a long rug weaving tradition, with centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. Wool is the most common pile, and some rugs mix wool with other fibres, as this one does.
How this pink and grey rainbow rug is made
This pink and grey rainbow rug is handmade from an 80% wool and 20% cotton blend. Wool is hard wearing and springy with a matte finish, which keeps the strong pink from looking glossy. Cotton is a plant fibre that is firm and holds its shape.
The back is a lilac grey scattered with pink and raspberry dots in diagonal lines, a softer echo of the front. Small shifts in where one colour band meets the next are normal in a handmade rug.
Sizing it for your room
At 313 x 243 cm this pink and grey rainbow rug is a main room size. In a bedroom, a king bed 183 cm wide leaves 30 cm of rug on each side, and a queen bed 153 cm wide leaves 45 cm on each side.
In a living room it can sit in front of a three seat sofa about 2.2 m long, with about 46.5 cm of rug past each end of the sofa. Under a 240 x 100 cm table for eight it leaves 36.5 cm at each end and 71.5 cm along each side. A 180 x 90 cm table for six leaves 66.5 cm at each end and 76.5 cm along each side, so chairs stay on the rug when they are pulled out.
Looking after your pink and grey rainbow rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
