Pale Green Transitional Rug
This pale green transitional rug is a hand knotted piece made in India from wool, measuring 450 x 364 cm. Its ground is a muted sage grey green, with navy and cream medallions set in columns, so the pale green transitional rug reads as a calm, detailed field.
The design up close
The field is set in columns. Navy medallions sit in the centre column, and cream and blue lozenges with star-like rosettes run down the columns either side of it. Small blossoms and leaf sprigs fill the gaps, so the field reads as a fine, even texture.
The main border is wide and cream, with blue grey vines, palmette-like leaves and small flowers along its length. Narrow guard stripes sit between the border and the field, which keeps the outer edge of the design clearly defined. Seen from a distance, the columns of this pale green transitional rug read as bands of colour running its length. The stripes sit close together, so the edge reads as a double line of colour.
Indian weaving and wool
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Alongside contemporary work, Indian workshops weave classic patterns in a wide range of colours and sizes. This pale green transitional rug sits in the Modern Transitional group of our Indian collection.
Wool is the most common pile in Indian rugs. Our records note vegetable dyes. The colours sit close together, so the grey green, cream and blue pass from one medallion to the next.
Where this pale green transitional rug suits
Grey green and cream work with pale timber, white walls and soft linen. The navy medallions give a living room a clear focal point, and the cream border lightens the edges of the rug. A grey green sofa in a neutral fabric would sit well here, and cream cushions bring out the medallions.
Sizing it for your room
At 450 x 364 cm the pale green transitional rug covers about 16.4 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves roughly 115 cm of rug showing past each end, so a lounge setting of sofa, two armchairs and a coffee table can all sit on it. In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm leaves roughly 105 cm at each end and 132 cm along each side.
A rug this large also needs a clear floor around it, so the border can be seen from the doorway, and it works best laid under the whole seating group. A coffee table of about 120 x 60 cm sits well in the middle of that group.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
