Off White Kashan Rug

The design of this off white Kashan rug
A grey blue medallion sits at the centre of the ivory field, with a navy outline and a pale centre. Smaller grey and blue medallions appear above and below it, each set inside a pointed outline. The large central shape sets the layout for the smaller motifs around it.
Across the field, blue, navy, grey and soft gold flower heads sit on fine stems, with small red accents here and there. In the corners, cream pieces with blue and grey detail frame the medallion, and the fine stems fill the spaces between them.
The border is cream and grey, with a band of blue and navy scrolling leaves between narrow guard stripes. A short fringe runs along both ends. This off white Kashan rug is a light, quiet piece, and the blue flowers keep the ivory from looking plain.
Kashan and its rugs
Kashan, in central Iran, is admired for deep reds and navy blues, curving floral borders and a graceful central medallion. This off white Kashan rug keeps the medallion and floral layout but swaps the strong reds for ivory, grey and blue.
Kashan rugs are usually finely knotted with the asymmetrical (Persian) knot, on a cotton foundation, with a short, dense pile. Many use soft, lustrous wool, and this one is woven from lamb wool.
How this rug is made
Our records note double hand knotting, so each knot was tied by hand on a loom. Lamb handspun wool gives the pile a soft hand, and the fine knotting keeps the small flower heads and stems clearly defined.
The field is ivory, so the grey and blue details carry the design. This rug is a size that is easy to turn around, which helps it wear evenly.
Sizing it for your room
At 142 x 103 cm this off white Kashan rug covers about 1.5 square metres. It is too small to sit under a full sofa, but it suits a bedside, an entry, or the floor beside a reading chair.

Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
