Ocean Blue Grass Rug
This ocean blue grass rug is a double hand knotted rug made in India from lamb’s wool, with a turquoise and pale blue field that has a soft, mottled look. Its size can be confirmed in the showroom.
The design up close
The field has no border and no central motif. Turquoise runs through most of it, with paler blue and grey white bands at roughly a quarter and three quarters of the way down. Those lighter bands are the only places where a pattern shows.
In the paler bands, faint small diamond and lattice shapes show through and read as woven texture across the band. Elsewhere the field has a fine, mottled texture, so the colour looks slightly different from one part of the rug to the next.
The edges are plain. A short fringe finishes the top and bottom ends, and the side edges run straight. This ocean blue grass rug is a contemporary design, so it reads as colour and texture first.
Where this Indian rug comes from
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century, and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area is the largest carpet-making region in India.
Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. This rug is made in India in that contemporary style, with a plain, textured field suited to modern homes.
How this ocean blue grass rug is made
Each knot is tied by hand, and this rug is double knotted. Our records note German dyes, and the pile is lamb’s wool, a soft fibre that suits a rug used every day in a living room.
Because the field is plain, the change in shade from band to band is the main feature of the rug. Turquoise and pale blue sit close together, so the colour moves gently across the floor.
Sizing the ocean blue grass rug
The size for this ocean blue grass rug can be confirmed in the showroom, where we can lay it against your sofa, table or bed before you decide. The turquoise field suits timber floors and pale walls, and grey or white furniture lets the blue carry the room.
A plain, textured rug like this works well under a dining table, and in a bedroom it sits beside a bed without competing with the bedding. Ocean blue also pairs with cream and timber, which keeps a light room calm.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
