Multicolour Abstract Rug
The Impasto rug is a multicolour abstract rug, made in India from wool and silk and measuring 298 x 244 cm. It covers about 7.3 square metres of floor.
The design up close
The surface looks like layers of paint that have been brushed on, scraped back and brushed on again. A pale grey and ivory ground shows through everywhere, broken up by patches of navy and charcoal, splashes of ochre gold, light sky blue, small touches of sage green and blocks of coral pink. Darker navy strokes gather towards the edges and in a few horizontal bars across the field, while the centre stays lighter and warmer.
Look closely and the colour breaks into small, ragged pixels, as if a painting had been enlarged until it starts to fall apart. Some coral patches stand slightly proud of the rest with a looped, textured surface, and the gold and blue areas have a soft shine. There is no border and no fringe. The edges are finished with a narrow peach coloured binding, so the pattern runs right out to the sides.
With so many colours in it, this abstract rug lets you pick up any one of them in cushions, art or a painted wall. It suits a modern rug setting with plain furniture, where the pattern can do the talking.
Indian weaving and this rug
India has a long rug weaving tradition, with centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. Wool is the most common pile, and some rugs mix wool with other fibres, as this one does.
How this multicolour abstract rug is made
This multicolour abstract rug is made from wool and silk, and you can see the two fibres working together in the pile. Some areas catch the light with a soft shine while others stay matte and give the surface body. Wool is hard wearing and springy, so the pile recovers after it is walked on. The mix of shine and matte is a large part of why the colours seem to change as you walk around the rug.
Sizing it for your room
At 298 x 244 cm it fits a living room with a three seat sofa of about 2.2 m, leaving 39 cm of rug past each end of the sofa. Under a king bed, 183 cm wide, it leaves 30.5 cm each side, and under a queen bed, 153 cm wide, 45.5 cm each side.
In a dining room it takes an eight seat table of 240 x 100 cm with 29 cm at each end and 72 cm along each side, or a six seat table of 180 x 90 cm with 59 cm at each end and 77 cm along each side, so the abstract rug frames the table on every side.
Looking after your multicolour abstract rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand. Rubbing spills can dull silk, so this rug needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
