Moss Green Velvet Rug
This moss green velvet rug is hand knotted and was made in India. It measures 272 x 161 cm, about 4.4 square metres, and its dark charcoal-green ground carries rows of moss, olive and teal motifs that catch the light in different places.
The design of this moss green velvet rug
The pattern is built in horizontal rows. Each row holds small arched and lattice motifs drawn in moss and olive green, with teal and yellow-green accents. The rows sit close together, so the eye reads them as bands rather than as separate shapes.
The ground is dark, close to charcoal, with fine streaks of grey-green running through it. Most motifs are shaded in similar greens, and a few brighter teal and yellow-green flecks sit among them. Because the contrast is low, the moss green tones are strongest where the motifs cluster and fade into the dark ground elsewhere.
The rug runs to its edges with a short fringe at each end, so the bands continue to the finish. From across a room this moss green velvet rug reads as one deep green-black field, and up close the individual motifs separate.
Where it is made
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century, and Bhadohi and Mirzapur is the largest carpet-making region in India.
Indian rugs in our collection lean towards contemporary designs, and Indian workshops weave many modern pieces in a wide range of colours. Our records note vegetable dyes for this moss green velvet rug.
Hand knotting and the surface
The title records this moss green velvet rug as hand knotted, so each knot was tied by hand on a loom, one at a time. Each knot is a separate piece of yarn, so the surface can vary slightly from one row to the next. The design also shows on the reverse, which is typical of hand knotting.
If you are unsure about the materials or the make, we are happy to explain what this rug is made from when you visit.
Sizing it for your room
At 272 x 161 cm this moss green velvet rug covers about 4.4 square metres. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves roughly 26 cm of rug showing past each end, and the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table.
In a dining room, a table of about 180 x 90 cm leaves about 46 cm of rug at each end and about 36 cm along each side, which suits a six-seat table.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum this rug on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the surface. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
