Midnight Blue Wool Silk Rug
This midnight blue wool silk rug is a double hand knotted rug made in India from wool and silk, measuring 300 x 250 cm. A near-black field carries pale blue floral motifs and vines, set inside a multi-band border.
The design up close
The field is near black, with blue grey and dark green tones showing through. Across it, pale periwinkle flowers, rosettes and tall flowering stems rise in rows. Several large round rosettes sit toward the top and bottom of the field, and a column of flowers runs up the centre, so the layout feels formal and balanced.
A band of pale blue lines frames the field, enclosing vines and small flowers in the corners. The outer border is busier, with floral vines, palmettes and small motifs drawn in the same pale blue on the dark ground. In this midnight blue wool silk rug the two borders share one palette, so neither competes with the field.
The blue motifs are drawn in pale tones against the dark ground, so the pattern reads clearly from across the room. Up close the vines branch into smaller leaves and buds, which fill the spaces between the larger flowers.
Wool and silk in Indian weaving
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Some Indian rugs mix wool with silk, as this midnight blue wool silk rug does, and this one is made from New Zealand wool and silk.
Indian workshops weave many contemporary and transitional designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. This rug sits in the transitional range, with a classic floral layout set in a dark, modern colour.
How this midnight blue wool silk rug is made
Each knot is tied by hand, and the rug is double knotted. Our records note vegetable dyes, and the pile is New Zealand wool with silk.
The flowers and vines have clean edges, which helps the pale motifs read clearly against the dark field. Because the field is so dark, the blue motifs carry most of the pattern.
Sizing the midnight blue wool silk rug
At 300 x 250 cm this midnight blue wool silk rug covers about 7.5 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 40 cm of rug showing past each end, so the front legs of the sofa and armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table.
Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, the rug leaves 60 cm at each end and 80 cm along each side. The dark field suits pale walls, timber or light floors, and cream or grey furniture, which lets the blue motifs stand out.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. Rubbing spills can dull silk, and it needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
