Limewash Cream Abstract Rug
This limewash cream abstract rug is a wool and silk piece made in India, measuring 300 x 244 cm. Pale cream and blue grey cover most of the field, with warm taupe and brown patches across the top and a few dark slate marks along the bottom, so the limewash cream abstract rug reads as light and weathered.
The design up close
The top third carries the strongest colour, with grey blue and charcoal blocks on the left and warm tan and brown patches across the top right. Below them, a pale band of ivory and blue grey runs across the middle, broken by short horizontal marks.
The lower half is mostly cream and pale grey, with light blue streaks and a few tan flecks. The tan patches at the top right are the warmest tones in this limewash cream abstract rug. Dark slate marks gather along the bottom edge. Short horizontal marks run across the middle band, and the whole rug reads as pale and airy, with its darkest accents kept to the top and bottom. The limewash cream abstract rug has no border, so the marks run across the whole field.
Along the left edge, grey blue and cream run together in short horizontal strokes, which gives the rug a brushed, weathered look.
Indian weaving and this limewash cream abstract rug
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes.
Wool is the most common pile in Indian rugs, and some rugs mix wool with silk. Our records note German dyes.
Where this rug suits
Cream and pale blue grey sit well with light oak, white walls and linen. The rug also suits a home office, where its neutral tones stay calm beside desk furniture. The warm tan patches at the top pick up timber tones, so the rug works with natural wood furniture in a bright room. The cream and blue grey tones also suit a bedroom with soft bedding.
Sizing it for your room
At 300 x 244 cm the limewash cream abstract rug covers about 7.3 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves roughly 40 cm of rug showing past each end. For a dining room, a table of about 180 x 90 cm leaves roughly 60 cm at each end and 77 cm along each side. A pale cream rug like this suits warm white walls and timber floors, and chairs can slide back on it without leaving the rug.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. Rubbing spills can dull silk, so it needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Lift the furniture now and then so the rug does not sit in one spot for long.
