Handmade Light Grey Abstract Rug
The Frost Lace rug is a light grey abstract rug, handmade in India from wool and measuring 275 x 231 cm. It covers about 6.4 square metres. It is a modern rug in light grey and ivory with a raised, lace like pattern.
The design up close
This is a quiet rug in pale silver grey with touches of ivory and a faint sage tint. Its pattern comes from texture more than colour. Soft raised shapes of pile sit on a flat, finely woven ground, so the design shows as high and low areas spread across the whole field.
The raised shapes look like loosely drawn leaves, petals and pebbles joined into a lacy all over network, with a hint of an old floral layout in places. Light from a window throws small shadows between them, so the rug looks a shade darker or lighter as the day moves on. There is no separate border. The ends carry a short ivory fringe and the sides are bound in matching grey.
Because the colour is so even, this abstract rug suits rooms where you want texture without a loud pattern: white or grey walls, pale timber, linen sofas and stone.
Indian weaving and this rug
India has a long rug weaving tradition, with centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. Wool is the most common pile, and some rugs mix wool with other fibres.
How this light grey abstract rug is made
This light grey abstract rug is handmade from wool. Wool is hard wearing and springy, and its matte surface keeps the grey soft and chalky. The raised pile areas feel thicker underfoot than the flat woven ground between them, which gives the rug its carved look.
Dust and grit tend to settle in the low areas, so regular vacuuming matters a little more here than on a rug with an even pile. Small differences in the height and outline of the raised shapes are normal in a handmade rug.
Sizing it for your room
At 275 x 231 cm this light grey abstract rug suits a medium living room, a bedroom or a dining area. A king bed 183 cm wide leaves 24 cm of rug on each side, and a queen bed 153 cm wide leaves 39 cm on each side, which gives a softer landing either side of the bed.
In front of a three seat sofa about 2.2 m long it reaches about 27.5 cm past each end of the sofa. Under a 180 x 90 cm table for six it leaves 47.5 cm at each end and 70.5 cm along each side, so most chairs stay on the rug when they are pulled out.
Looking after your light grey abstract rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
