Handmade Light Blue and Charcoal Rainbow Rug
The Fjord rug is a light blue and charcoal rainbow rug, handmade in India from wool and cotton and measuring 312 x 250 cm. That is about 7.8 square metres of floor.
The design up close
Light blue runs through most of this light blue and charcoal rainbow rug, broken by wide bands of charcoal and soft brown that drift across its width. The colour changes gradually, fading from pale sky blue to near black and back again.
Over all of it sits a fine diamond lattice. In the pale bands the lattice is drawn in charcoal and stays crisp and open. In the dark bands the lines turn light blue, so the same pattern flips to pale lines on a dark ground.
There is no border. The lattice runs right to the sides, and both ends finish in a short ivory fringe. With no centre medallion it has no fixed top or bottom, so it is easy to place.
Indian weaving and this rug
India has a long rug weaving tradition, with centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. Wool is the most common pile, and some rugs mix wool with other fibres, as this one does.
How this light blue and charcoal rainbow rug is made
This modern rug is handmade from an 80% wool and 20% cotton blend. Wool forms most of the pile you walk on. It is hard wearing and springy, with a matte surface that keeps the blues soft to look at. Cotton is a plant fibre that is firm and holds its shape, and it gives the rug a steady, flat body on the floor.
Because it is made by hand, the bands are slightly uneven from one side to the other, and the fades never repeat exactly. That gives the surface movement, and it sits easily beside other contemporary style rugs.
Sizing it for your room
This light blue and charcoal rainbow rug suits a large living room or a main bedroom. In a bedroom, a queen bed (153 cm wide) set across the 250 cm width leaves 48.5 cm of rug each side, and a king bed (183 cm) leaves 33.5 cm each side, enough to step onto something soft in the morning.
In a living room, a three seat sofa of about 2.2 m placed along the 312 cm length leaves about 46 cm at each end. Under a dining table, a 180 x 90 cm table for six leaves 66 cm at each end and 80 cm along each side, so chairs can stay on the rug when pulled out a little. A 240 x 100 cm table for eight leaves 36 cm at each end and 75 cm along each side.
Looking after your light blue and charcoal rainbow rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
