Kashan Sarasari Persian Rug
This Kashan Sarasari Persian rug is a hand knotted rug from Iran, woven in wool and measuring 370 x 240 cm. Its ivory ground is covered from end to end with a fine all-over pattern of blue grey flowers and vines, inside a wide sage green border. It suits a room where you want an even field of pattern with no single centre piece.
The design up close
The field is ivory with a dense, even pattern of small flowers, buds and curling vines in blue grey and pale blue. A few rust and red buds sit among them. There is no central medallion, so the pattern runs evenly from one end of the rug to the other.
The border is a wide band in sage green with blue grey scrolls and flowers, edged by a narrow guard of blue grey and cream. A thin light line separates the border from the darker frame, and the corners turn with the same scrolls, so the frame looks continuous from side to side.
Kashan and its weaving
Kashan, in central Iran, is admired for its deep reds and navy blues, curving floral borders and graceful central medallions. This Kashan Sarasari Persian rug carries the floral side of that tradition, with vines and flowers running across the whole field. Kashan rugs are usually finely knotted with the asymmetrical (Persian) knot, on a cotton foundation, with a short, dense pile.
How a Kashan Sarasari Persian rug is made
Every rug in this collection was hand knotted in Iran. Weavers tie each knot by hand on a loom, row after row, then trim the pile level, and the design shows on the back too, with small irregularities from hand knotting. Because the field carries so many small flowers, each one is built from its own set of knots.
Sizing it for your room
At 370 x 240 cm, this Kashan Sarasari Persian rug covers about 8.9 square metres. Under a three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m, the rug runs roughly 75 cm past each end, so the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table.
Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, there is roughly 65 cm of rug at each end and about 70 cm along each side, so chairs pulled out from the table stay on the rug. Anyone shopping for a Persian rug for a dining room should measure the table first.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum your Kashan Sarasari Persian rug on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
