Handmade Ivory Multicolour Grass Rug
The Seashell rug is a ivory multicolour grass rug, handmade in India from wool and silk and measuring 431 x 309 cm. That gives you 13.3 square metres of floor, enough for a large living room or an open dining area.
The design up close
An ivory ground carries a design worked in several colours. From above, the rug looks like a pale ivory and cream surface with soft vertical streaks, and the fine pattern is hard to see.
Crouch down to floor level and the colours come out. Rows of tiny dots and short dashes run across the rug in muted gold, brown, grey, blue grey and a few flecks of rust. Some stripes are checks, some are straight broken lines, and some are fine chevron bands like rows of small arrows. Broad ivory stretches sit between them, so the colour appears in thin lines instead of large blocks.
The pile has a sheen that moves with the light. Under low sun the ivory looks almost white and the dotted lines stand out. In flat light it settles into a soft cream. A fringe finishes both ends, and the back is a pale cream weave with a faint pattern of dots.
Indian weaving and this rug
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. Wool is the most common pile, and some rugs mix wool with silk, which is the case here.
How this ivory multicolour grass rug is made
This ivory multicolour grass rug is handmade in India from wool and silk. The wool shows as the matte, soft cream areas. The silk is the shinier fibre, and it gives the pale ground its glow as you walk past.
On a rug this light, the difference between matte and shiny fibre is the main source of depth. The sheen does a lot of the work here, because the pattern uses fine lines of colour instead of strong blocks.
Sizing it for your room
At 431 x 309 cm, this ivory multicolour grass rug suits a large room. Under a dining table of 240 x 100 cm that seats eight, it leaves 95.5 cm beyond each end of the table and 104.5 cm along each side, so chairs can be pulled out and still stand on the rug.
In a living room, a 3-seat sofa about 2.2 m long placed along the length leaves 105.5 cm of rug at each end. Under a queen bed 153 cm wide, there is 78 cm on each side. Under a king bed 183 cm wide, there is 63 cm.
Looking after your ivory multicolour grass rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
Rubbing spills can dull silk, so this rug needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand.
