Inky Blue Rainbow Rug
This inky blue rainbow rug is a hand double knotted rug from India, measuring 438 x 306 cm, about 13.4 square metres. Its field is built from horizontal bands that move from deep navy to pale grey-blue and back again, with a touch of white flecked through the lighter bands, so the colour looks layered rather than flat.
The design of this inky blue rainbow rug
The rug has no motif and no border. Its colour changes in broad horizontal bands that alternate between deep and pale, so it reads as a run of stripes that fade into one another. Because the bands run across the width, the pattern looks the same from either long side of the room. Inside each band a fine lattice of tiny diamonds shows in a slightly lighter blue, which gives the surface texture without any figure in it.
The edges are plain, with no border stripe, and fringe runs along both short ends. The pale flecks are most visible in the lighter bands, where the white catches the light and the blue looks grey-blue rather than dark.
Indian rugs and their weaving centres
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, and Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century. The Bhadohi and Mirzapur area in Uttar Pradesh is the largest carpet-making region in India. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. This rug belongs to that contemporary side of our Indian rugs, with a plain, tonal field rather than a traditional medallion.
How it is made
This rug is hand double knotted, so each knot is tied by hand on the loom and the pile is trimmed level afterwards. The lattice is fine enough that it is easiest to see up close, while from across the room the bands carry the design. Each band of this inky blue rainbow rug changes tone gradually, so the transitions look soft rather than sharp.
Sizing it for your room
At 438 x 306 cm the rug covers about 13.4 square metres. Under a sofa of around 2.2 m, about 109 cm of rug shows past each end, so a full lounge setting fits on it. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug shows roughly 99 cm at each end and 103 cm along each side. For a table of about 180 x 90 cm with six chairs, the margins grow to about 129 cm at each end and 108 cm along each side.
This inky blue rainbow rug suits pale timber, white walls and cool grey furniture.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths favour dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
