Hot Pink Rainbow Rug
This hot pink rainbow rug was hand double knotted in India and measures 375 x 280 cm, about 10.5 square metres of floor. Bands of hot pink, magenta and violet alternate with grey and dark purple grey stripes running across the rug, so the bright colour is balanced by quieter tones. It has a textured, streaky surface that catches the light differently from one band to the next.
The hot pink rainbow rug up close
The pink bands are the brightest part of the design. They run from a clear, bright pink near the top to a deeper magenta in the lower third. Between them the grey and purple grey stripes are darker and cooler, which keeps the pink from feeling heavy. Up close a fine dotted texture shows in the pink bands, and the grey stripes look flecked with white. A short fringe finishes the top and bottom ends, and the sides are plain with no contrasting border. It lies flat on timber boards.
Where it comes from
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian rugs in a contemporary style are often woven to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. This hot pink rainbow rug is a contemporary design in that tradition, and its bold colour makes a strong statement in a room with neutral walls and furniture.
How it is made
Hand knotting means each knot in this hot pink rainbow rug is tied by hand onto the warp threads of the loom, row after row, and the pile is then trimmed to an even height. Double knotting ties each knot around two warp threads. Turn the rug over and the knots show on the back as a fine, slightly uneven texture, typical of hand work. Because the colour is worked knot by knot, the pink bands and grey stripes are part of the rug itself rather than a print on the surface.
Sizing it for your room
At 375 x 280 cm this hot pink rainbow rug covers about 10.5 square metres, so it suits a living room or a generous dining area. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves roughly 78 cm of rug showing past each end. Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, it leaves about 98 cm at each end and 95 cm along each side, enough for chairs to be pulled out. Its bright bands work best with plain, neutral furniture so that they stand out.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum this hot pink rainbow rug on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths favour dark, quiet spots, such as the area under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
