Brown Heriz Tribal Rug
This brown Heriz tribal rug was hand knotted in Iran in wool and measures 285 x 219 cm. It is built in coffee tones: a large stepped medallion in mocha and tan on an ivory field, with navy outlines and a dark chocolate border. Our records note vegetable dyes and New Zealand wool.
The design up close
The medallion is drawn in straight lines and steps rather than curves. At its centre sits a navy star with four arms, set inside a tan diamond, which sits inside a larger brown diamond with hooked, stepped edges. Above and below, navy arrow-like pendants point to the ends of the rug.
Around the medallion, the ivory ground fills with small angular leaves, flowers and hooks in brown, navy and soft pink. Each corner has a stepped quarter medallion in tan and navy. The border repeats rosettes and angular vines on dark brown, between narrow stripes of rust and ivory.
The colour name in our records, coffee colours, fits: the browns run from pale latte tan to dark espresso, with ivory between them like milk. The navy outline runs through every part of the design, from the centre star to the border, and holds the browns together. Because the layout mirrors itself in both directions, you can turn the rug end for end without changing how the room looks.
Heriz and its rugs
Heriz rugs are woven in villages near Heriz in north-west Iran. Bold geometric medallions and a heavy, hard-wearing weave make them a favourite for busy living rooms. This brown Heriz tribal rug shows that geometric drawing: the weavers turn floral motifs into stepped, angular shapes, which gives a Heriz its strong, architectural look.
How it is made
Each knot is tied by hand on a loom. Turn a brown Heriz tribal rug over and you can see the medallion and border on the back, knot by knot. Small changes of shade within one colour, called abrash, come from dyeing wool in batches. They are a sign of handwork, not a fault.
Sizing it for your room
At 285 x 219 cm the rug covers about 6.2 square metres. Lay it across the bottom two thirds of a queen bed, which is 153 cm wide in Australia, and about 66 cm of rug shows on each side. In a living room it sits under a coffee table with the front legs of a sofa and two chairs on it. A brown Heriz tribal rug in these coffee colours sits well with timber floors, leather and dark wood furniture.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
