Grey Navy Bamboo Silk Rug
This grey navy bamboo silk rug is an abstract design made in India in bamboo silk, measuring 426 x 304 cm. Mottled patches of grey, charcoal and pale taupe spread across the whole field, so the grey navy bamboo silk rug reads as a soft, cloudy texture more than a set motif.
The design up close
Taupe clouds sit in the upper left and through the centre, while the upper right corner darkens to a deep navy that fades out toward the middle. The lower half lightens to ivory and pale grey, so the top of the rug feels heavier than the bottom. A thin, darker line runs down the centre from top to bottom and breaks the field in two. Near the middle left, a cluster of darker flecks sits among the taupe and adds a little depth to the centre.
Short, scratchy strokes of grey and blue grey break up the colour everywhere else. Where the grey is lightest, near the lower edge, the surface looks almost chalky, and the transitions between colours are soft and blend into one another. The grey navy bamboo silk rug has no border, so the pattern runs to every edge.
Indian weaving and bamboo silk
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes.
Bamboo silk is a viscose (rayon) fibre made from bamboo cellulose, with a silk-like sheen. It is softer and less resilient than wool, so it suits lower-traffic rooms.
Where a grey navy bamboo silk rug suits
Grey and navy sit well with pale timber, white walls and concrete floors. The dark top right corner gives a room a strong anchor, while the pale lower half keeps the rug from looking heavy. Blue and charcoal furnishings, and plain cushions in cream or taupe, pick up the colours in the field. A living room or bedroom suits a rug like this better than a busy hallway.
Sizing it for your room
At 426 x 304 cm the grey navy bamboo silk rug covers about 13.0 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves roughly 1 m of rug showing past each end, and armchairs facing it can rest their front legs on the rug.
In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm leaves roughly 93 cm at each end and 102 cm along each side, enough space to pull the chairs back. A grey navy bamboo silk rug this size also suits a living room with two sofas facing each other.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. Rubbing spills can dull bamboo silk, which needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Lift the furniture now and then so the rug does not sit in one spot for long.
