Grey Moroccan Style Wool Rug
This grey Moroccan style wool rug is handmade in India and measures 230 x 160 cm, or about 3.7 square metres. Its pale grey ground carries charcoal lines that draw a diamond pattern, chained one above another in three columns.
The design up close
This grey Moroccan style wool rug has no border. Three columns of diamond shapes run from the top to the bottom of the rug, each one stacked from small nested diamonds to larger lozenges.
Thin zigzag lines link the columns, and short vertical lines join the diamonds at intervals. Near each side edge a wavy line runs parallel to the rug’s edge, which frames the design without a formal border. The outer columns sit close to those edges, so the design fills the whole rug.
The charcoal lines have a slightly broken, dotted edge, so they look hand drawn. The ground between them is a mottled grey and cream with fine horizontal streaks, which gives the rug texture and a soft, faded look. On this grey Moroccan style wool rug the streaks run the full length, so the ground never looks flat.
Where this rug is woven
India has a long rug weaving tradition, with centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Bhadohi and Mirzapur is the largest rug making region in India. Indian workshops weave many contemporary designs, often to order and in a wide range of colours and sizes, and this rug sits in that contemporary group.
How a grey Moroccan style wool rug is made
This grey Moroccan style wool rug is handmade from wool. Our records note vegetable dyes.
Plant-based colour can vary slightly from one part of a rug to another, and the grey here shifts from lighter to darker across the field. Hand drawn diamonds never line up exactly, so the columns drift a little and the zigzags do not repeat at identical heights. Up close the grey has a fibrous look, with fine streaks running across the rug rather than along it.
Sizing it for your room
At 230 x 160 cm this grey Moroccan style wool rug covers about 3.7 square metres. Its 2.3 m length suits a coffee table setting, where the front legs of a sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around the table.
Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, which seats six, it leaves roughly 25 cm at each end and 35 cm along each side. The pale grey ground suits timber floors and neutral walls, and the charcoal lines give plain furniture some pattern. A room with pale walls and a light sofa lets the lines stand out most.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not catch the surface. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the surface. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
