Grey Green Bamboo Silk Rug
This grey green bamboo silk rug is hand knotted in India from bamboo silk and wool and measures 378 x 277 cm. Its surface is mostly mid grey, with a softer grey-green cast in the lighter bands, and the texture runs in fine horizontal lines from one end to the other.
The design up close
Here the design is texture rather than motif. Fine horizontal lines run the full length of this grey green bamboo silk rug, and they change tone every few rows, so the grey moves from slate to a lighter, dusty shade and back again. Faint dotted marks appear in the upper and lower thirds, but they are so low in contrast that they read as part of the weave of this grey green bamboo silk rug.
From a distance the ground reads as an even grey, and the lighter bands catch more light than the darker ones. There is no border, medallion or corner panel to draw the eye. The field reads as one even surface from the fringe at the top to the fringe at the bottom, and the short white fringe is the only contrast at the edges.
Indian rugs and their weaving centres
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century, and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area is the largest carpet-making region in India. Indian workshops weave many contemporary designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. This grey green bamboo silk rug belongs to that contemporary line.
How it is made
Each knot is tied by hand on a loom, and the pile is then cut level. Our records note German dyes. The rug is made from bamboo silk and wool. Bamboo silk is a viscose (rayon) fibre made from bamboo cellulose, with a silk-like sheen. It is softer and less resilient than wool, so this grey green bamboo silk rug suits a quieter room better than a busy hallway.
Sizing this grey green bamboo silk rug
At 378 x 277 cm the rug covers about 10.5 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 79 cm of rug showing past each end, so the whole sofa and a coffee table can sit on it. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves roughly 69 cm at each end and 88.5 cm along each side. Grey and grey green tones suit pale timber, white walls and furnishings in soft neutrals.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. Rubbing spills can dull bamboo silk, so when it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand and handles that fibre with care.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
