Grey Grass Textured Rug
This grey grass textured rug is a double hand knotted rug made in India from lamb’s wool, with a field of charcoal, silver and white bands. Its size can be confirmed in the showroom.
The design up close
Charcoal bands sit across the upper middle of the field and again across the lower third, with silver and white bands above, between and below them. The darkest bands are near black, and the lighter bands read as pale grey, so the tone shifts every few rows.
Each band carries a fine diamond lattice, so the surface looks like woven mesh up close. The lattice is easiest to see in the lighter bands, and in the darkest ones it fades into the ground. In places a faint blue cast shows through the grey, most clearly in the silver bands near the top.
The field has no border and no central motif. A short fringe finishes the top and bottom ends, and the side edges are plain. From across the room this grey grass textured rug reads as one textured grey field, and up close the lattice gives it detail.
Where this Indian rug comes from
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition. Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century, and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh is the largest carpet-making region in India.
Indian workshops weave many contemporary and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. This grey grass textured rug fits that contemporary side of the range, with a plain field and no central motif.
How this grey grass textured rug is made
Each knot is tied by hand, and the rug is double knotted. Our records note vegetable dyes, and the wool is lamb’s wool, which is soft to the touch and easy to live with day to day.
The charcoal and silver tones are built from many shades of yarn, so the field looks layered and mixed. Because the colours are mixed through the field, one band seldom looks like the next, which suits a room where you want texture without a strong motif.
Sizing the grey grass textured rug
The size for this grey grass textured rug can be confirmed in the showroom, where we can lay it against your furniture for a direct comparison. Its neutral field suits living rooms with white walls, timber or pale floors, and black or grey furniture.
A rug with a plain, textured field like this sits well under a dining table, and in a bedroom it works beside a bed without competing with the bedding. Grey textured rugs also pair with blue or green accents in cushions or art, so the room can change with the season.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
