Grey Floral Transitional Rug
This grey floral transitional rug is hand knotted in India in wool and measures 245 x 158 cm, or about 3.9 square metres. Its pale grey ivory ground carries charcoal and grey flowers, vines and rosettes in a quiet, faded pattern.
The design up close
Round blooms run down the centre of the field, with a larger sunflower-like flower in the lower half and smaller rosettes above it. Vines and stems branch out on both sides of this central line, carrying buds, leaves and small flowers in grey and charcoal across the ground.
This grey floral transitional rug has a rectangular inner frame in darker grey, which sets the field apart from the outer border. Two wider sunflower-like blooms sit lower on each side of the field, and the outer border holds a denser pattern of curling vines and small flowers in the same grey tones.
The grey tones are soft and worn in places, with some motifs fading into the ground. Short fringe finishes the top and bottom ends. The old-style flower patterns drawn in a muted palette give the rug its transitional look.
Weaving centres in India
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Agra has been a carpet weaving centre since at least the 17th century. The Bhadohi and Mirzapur area is the largest carpet making region in India, and workshops there and elsewhere now weave many modern designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes.
How a grey floral transitional rug is made
This grey floral transitional rug is hand knotted, so a weaver ties each knot by hand on a loom, then shears the pile level. Our records note vegetable dyes. Plant-based colour can vary slightly from one part of a rug to another, and the grey here is not one flat shade.
Wool forms the pile of this grey floral transitional rug. The charcoal lines of the flowers stay clear against the pale ground, which is why the pattern reads well from the far side of a room.
Sizing it for your room
At 245 x 158 cm this grey floral transitional rug covers about 3.9 square metres. At just under 2.5 m long, it is the right size for a coffee table setting, where the front legs of a sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around the table.
Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, which seats six, it leaves roughly 33 cm at each end and 34 cm along each side. Pale timber, light walls and neutral furniture suit it best, so the charcoal flowers stand out.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
