Grey Charcoal Wool Runner
This grey charcoal wool runner was made in India from wool and silk. It measures 284 x 77 cm, and its grey and beige ground carries charcoal and blue floral medallions down its length.
The design up close
Large rosette-like flowers in charcoal and navy stand one above another down the centre of the runner. Between them, curling vines, leaves and smaller blossoms in slate blue and muted teal fill the ground. Along the long edges a narrow band of smaller motifs frames the field.
This grey charcoal wool runner has a fine horizontal stripe running through its grey and beige ground, which gives the surface a soft, textured look. The stripe runs across the whole ground, so the surface still looks textured between the flowers. The charcoal, slate and beige sit close together in tone, so the runner stays calm underfoot and does not compete with a patterned wall. Short fringe finishes both short ends.
Where Indian rugs come from
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, and its weaving centres include Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century. The Bhadohi and Mirzapur area is the largest carpet-making region in India, and many Indian workshops weave modern designs like this runner in a wide range of colours and sizes.
Our Indian collection leans towards contemporary and designer pieces, many in wool and silk blends like this runner. Bamboo silk is a separate fibre, a viscose (rayon) made from bamboo cellulose, and it is softer and less resilient than wool.
How the runner is made
Our records note vegetable dyes. The tones of this grey charcoal wool runner run from pale grey and beige to charcoal and blue. The runner pairs wool with silk, and wool is the most common pile in Indian rugs.
Sizing a grey charcoal wool runner for your hallway
At 284 x 77 cm the runner covers about 2.2 square metres. Its 77 cm width suits a hallway between about 97 and 117 cm wide, which leaves 10 to 20 cm of floor showing on each side. The long, even line of pattern also suits a kitchen galley. This grey charcoal wool runner has grey and charcoal tones that suit timber floors, pale walls and modern furnishings. A runner like this also works well at the foot of a staircase or along a corridor, where the pattern runs with the length of the space.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. Rubbing spills can dull silk, and it needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath this grey charcoal wool runner. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
