Grey Botanical Abstract Rug
This grey botanical abstract rug is a hand knotted piece made in India in wool and silk, measuring 450 x 348 cm. Grey, charcoal and olive edges fade into a teal wash across the upper middle, and pale botanical motifs run through the whole field, so the grey botanical abstract rug reads as faded foliage on a misty ground.
The design up close
Cream and ivory motifs run in columns through the lower two thirds: stems, leaves, small tree-like shapes and flower heads, with the pattern thinning and breaking up toward the top. A pale misty band crosses the upper third, with teal and aqua wash above and around it. The pale band is the lightest part of the rug, so it draws the eye first, and the teal wash fades out before the lower third.
A narrow border of leafy vines runs along the top and bottom, in cream on dark grey. The edges are darker, with charcoal and olive shading, so the pale centre stands out. The grey botanical abstract rug has no central medallion, so the botanical motifs spread across the whole field.
Up close, the cream strokes have a fine, slightly broken edge, as if the pattern has been worn back in places to a darker base. Some motifs are only partly formed, which gives the botanical drawing a loose, informal feel.
Indian weaving and this grey botanical abstract rug
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes.
Wool is the most common pile in Indian rugs, and some rugs mix wool with silk.
Where this rug suits
Grey and teal tones sit well with pale timber, white walls and grey linen. Dark timber side tables and grey ceramics pick up its charcoal and olive edges, and the rug can sit under the whole seating group. The cream motifs stay light against darker floors, so the pattern shows clearly in a room with timber or dark tiles.
Sizing it for your room
At 450 x 348 cm the grey botanical abstract rug covers about 15.7 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves roughly 115 cm of rug showing past each end, so a lounge setting of sofa, two armchairs and a coffee table sits comfortably on it. Chairs at the dining table sit comfortably inside the edges of this grey botanical abstract rug. In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm leaves roughly 105 cm at each end and 124 cm along each side.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. Rubbing spills can dull silk, so it needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Lift the furniture now and then so the rug does not sit in one spot for long.
