Grey Blue Designer Runner
This grey blue designer runner was double hand knotted in Agra, India, from wool and measures 958 x 92 cm. Faint scrolling motifs run down its length in cream and blue grey, over a ground that is paler across the upper section and a little darker lower down. Our records note vegetable dyes.
The design up close
The runner has a fine, brushed texture, with thin horizontal lines crossing its width. Scrolling rosette shapes repeat along the length. In the upper section they are faint against pale grey, and lower down they stand out more clearly in cream against a darker blue grey.
Colour stays close to neutral throughout. Grey, blue grey, cream and a touch of beige sit side by side, so no single shade dominates. This grey blue designer runner reads as one continuous strip, with a plain edge on each side.
Indian weaving and long runners
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century. Wool is the most common pile in Indian rugs, and that is the material this runner is made from. Our Indian rugs suit contemporary living rooms, bedrooms and offices, and this grey blue designer runner follows that modern side of Indian weaving.
How a grey blue designer runner is made
Double hand knotted means each knot is tied by hand around two warp threads, which gives a firmer pile than a single knot. The pile is sheared level once the knotting is finished, so the surface stays even along the full 9.58 m length. The handspun wool gives the runner a soft surface, and its greys and blues are set into the knots as it is woven.
Sizing it for your room
At 958 x 92 cm the runner covers about 8.8 square metres, and at 9.58 m long it suits a long hallway. A hallway about 1.1 to 1.3 m wide fits it, leaving roughly 10 to 20 cm of floor on each side. A grey blue designer runner this length works best where it can run from one door to the next. Its length also gives a long hallway a clear floor line from one end to the other.
A kitchen galley or a long corridor suits this shape too, and its grey blue tones sit well beside white cabinetry and timber or stone floors. This grey blue designer runner keeps the eye moving from one end to the other.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
