Grey Blue Contemporary Rug
This grey blue contemporary rug is made in India in wool and measures 240 x 168 cm, or about 4.0 square metres. Our records note German dyes. Its blue and grey tones run in horizontal bands of small marks, with pale flecks lifting the darker areas.
The design up close
This grey blue contemporary rug has no border and no centre medallion. Its pattern runs across the whole field in horizontal bands of small rectangular and wavy marks, built up in navy, slate blue and light grey.
Darker navy bands sit low on the rug, and a lighter, silvery grey runs through the upper middle. Cream and sand flecks show through in places, and a paler band across the middle right lifts the surface. Up close the small marks are shaped like short dashes, squares and little arches, set in rows that stack like brickwork. Where a row breaks, the cream thread shows through and lightens the band.
The edges have a short fringe at the top and bottom. On this grey blue contemporary rug the marks run right up to the sides, so the pattern looks continuous rather than framed.
Weaving centres in India
Agra has been a carpet weaving centre since at least the 17th century. The Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh is the largest carpet making region in India, and India has a long carpet tradition with classic patterns alongside modern ones. Workshops there now weave many contemporary designs, often to order and in a wide range of colours and sizes.
How a grey blue contemporary rug is made
This grey blue contemporary rug is made of wool. Our records note German dyes for its colours, so the blues and greys come from dyed wool.
Because the marks are small and repeated, the pattern reads as texture from a distance and as detail from close up. The blue grey scheme also keeps the rug calm beside busier furniture.
Sizing it for your room
This grey blue contemporary rug at 240 x 168 cm covers about 4.0 square metres. At 2.4 m long, it is the right size for a coffee table setting, where the front legs of a sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around the table.
Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, which seats six, it leaves roughly 30 cm at each end and 39 cm along each side. Blue and grey furnishings suit it, and cream or pale walls keep the room from feeling heavy. A rug this colour works best beside a cream sofa or pale timber, where the navy bands read against a light floor.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not catch the surface. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the surface. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
