Handmade Grey and Slate Blue Abstract Rug
The Moonstone rug is a grey and slate blue abstract rug, handmade in India from wool and measuring 309 x 243 cm. It covers about 7.5 square metres of floor.
The design up close
The field is painted in soft, overlapping patches of grey, lavender grey, warm beige and taupe, with a few small pools of sky blue and deep slate. Nothing repeats.
Around the field runs a wandering line in dark slate blue, drawn like a brush mark that thickens, thins and breaks in places. It sits inside a narrow margin of pale grey green, so it works as a frame without ever becoming a formal border. That hand drawn edge is what gives this abstract rug its shape when you see it whole.
Up close the pile has a streaky, slightly mottled surface, and the ends finish in a short cream fringe, cut close. A grey and slate blue abstract rug like this suits a room with grey, white or warm stone tones, and it sits well under dark timber or black metal furniture.
Indian weaving and this rug
India has a long rug weaving tradition, with centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. Wool is the most common pile, and some rugs mix wool with other fibres.
How this grey and slate blue abstract rug is made
This rug is handmade from wool. Wool is hard wearing and springy underfoot, so the pile recovers well after people walk across it, and its matte finish keeps the soft greys and lavenders from looking flat or shiny.
Turn a corner over and the back is a chunky weave in grey and ivory, with the slate outline and the blue and tan patches showing faintly through. The mix of close tones on the front of the grey and slate blue abstract rug also means a single stray mark does not stand out as it would on a plain field. As a modern rug it works in both a new build and an older home.
Sizing it for your room
At 309 x 243 cm this is a large rug for a living room, dining room or main bedroom. In a living room it can sit in front of a three seat sofa of about 2.2 m with 44.5 cm to spare beyond each end, so the front legs of the sofa and chairs can rest on it.
Under a 180 x 90 cm dining table it leaves 64.5 cm at each end and 76.5 cm along each side, which gives chairs room to pull back. Laid across the bed in a main bedroom, its 309 cm length leaves 63 cm each side of a king bed, which is 183 cm wide.
Looking after your grey and slate blue abstract rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
