Green Contemporary Wool Rug
This green contemporary wool rug was double hand knotted in Agra, India, in handspun New Zealand wool and measures 293 x 272 cm. Its field is a heathered blend of teal, aqua and green, with specks of cream and gold running through it. At about 8.0 square metres it suits a living room or a dining room.
The design up close
The surface has no motif and no border. Fine streaks of colour run horizontally, and across them short dashes and small blocks of pale cream and gold form broken rows. The mix is dense enough that the field reads as one textured tone from a distance. The streaks run level across the full width, so the rug has no sense of direction and works equally well in a long or a square room.
Up close, the colours shift from band to band. Darker teal streaks sit beside lighter aqua and grey green, and the gold specks are scattered across the field and not gathered in one place. Short fringe finishes the top and bottom ends.
The rug is a calm base, so brighter cushions and artwork can carry the colour in the room.
Indian rugs and their design
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, and Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century. Indian workshops weave many contemporary designs in a wide range of colours and sizes, and this green contemporary wool rug belongs to that modern group.
How a green contemporary wool rug is made
This rug is double hand knotted, with each knot tied by hand on a loom. Our records note German dyes. The handspun yarn is not perfectly even in thickness, which gives the streaks their soft, slightly irregular look across the field.
Sizing a green contemporary wool rug in your home
At 293 x 272 cm the rug covers about 8.0 square metres. Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, it leaves roughly 57 cm at each end and 91 cm along each side, enough room for chairs to slide back. In a living room, a three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 37 cm of rug showing past each end, so the front legs of the sofa sit well inside the edge.
A green contemporary wool rug suits timber floors, cream or white walls and neutral furniture. Because the surface has no pattern, it sits well beside bold art or brightly coloured cushions and does not compete with them. Its mixed, quiet tone also suits a room with a neutral sofa, where the rug adds colour without a second pattern.
Looking after your green contemporary wool rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
