Floral Field Wool Silk Rug
This floral field wool silk rug was hand knotted in India from wool and bamboo silk, and it measures 372 x 275 cm. Its grey ground carries faded flowers and medallion shapes in turquoise, blush, apricot and rust, which give the rug a softened, washed look.
The design up close
A washed grey centre holds the largest design, a floral medallion built from lacy rosettes and small blossoms in blush pink and cream. Thin lines of pale motif spread out from it, so the field reads as a scatter of faint flowers rather than one bold shape.
The edges are warmer. Along the left side and across the top corners, apricot, mustard and rust florals sit on grey, and turquoise blooms gather down the right side and in the lower corner. The colour thins toward the middle, so the centre looks lighter than the outer band.
This floral field wool silk rug is busy from across the room and clearer when you stand over it, because each flower has its own outline and tone.
Indian rugs and where they are made
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century, and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area is the largest carpet-making region in India.
Our Indian collection leans towards contemporary and designer pieces, alongside classic patterns, in wool and blends of wool and silk. This floral field wool silk rug sits in the contemporary part of the range.
How a floral field wool silk rug is made
This rug is hand knotted, so each tuft is tied separately onto the foundation and the pile is sheared to an even height. Its pile mixes wool with bamboo silk, which gives a silk-like sheen. Bamboo silk is a viscose (rayon) fibre made from bamboo cellulose, and it is softer and less resilient than wool, so it suits rooms with lighter foot traffic.
Because it is hand knotted, each flower differs slightly in outline from its neighbours, and the spacing between motifs changes a little across the field.
Sizing a floral field wool silk rug in your room
At 372 x 275 cm the rug covers about 10.2 square metres, so it suits a large lounge room or a formal dining room. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 76 cm of rug showing past each end, and two armchairs facing the sofa can rest their front legs on the rug with a coffee table between them.
Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves roughly 66 cm at each end and about 88 cm along each side. A floral field wool silk rug this size gives the whole seating area a single base of colour.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. Rubbing spills can dull silk, and bamboo silk needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
