Handmade Dark Olive and Blue Geometric Rug
The Bluestone rug is a dark olive and blue geometric rug, handmade in India from wool and measuring 302 x 249 cm. It covers about 7.5 square metres. It is a modern rug in dark olive, navy and sky blue, with long zigzag lines that form a loose diamond lattice.
The design up close
The ground is a deep olive brown, close to charcoal in some light. Across it run long, thin lines of cream and pale blue at shallow angles, crossing to form wide chevrons and stretched diamonds. Some of the diamonds fill with bands of sky blue that stand out against the dark field, and others stay dark and dense.
Up close the surface is a mix of short streaks in navy, olive, brown, mauve and blue, with small flecks of rose and raspberry scattered through it. The zigzags break into little stepped peaks, so the pattern looks drawn by hand rather than ruled. There is no border and no fringe. The edges are bound with a cord of matching yarn for a clean outline.
The dark colours suit a room with plenty of light. This geometric rug pairs well with blue or grey sofas, walnut or oak, brass lamps and white walls, and the rose flecks pick up pink or terracotta cushions.
Indian weaving and this rug
India has a long rug weaving tradition, with centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. Wool is the most common pile, and some rugs mix wool with other fibres.
How this dark olive and blue geometric rug is made
This dark olive and blue geometric rug is handmade from wool. The pile has a chunky, nubbly surface, and wool gives it a matte look that keeps the blues soft. Wool is hard wearing and springy, so it recovers well under foot traffic and chairs.
The back is a grey mauve weave with rows of cream, navy, rust and sage flecks. Small shifts in line and colour across the rug are normal in hand work.
Sizing it for your room
At 302 x 249 cm this dark olive and blue geometric rug is a main room size. In a bedroom, a king bed 183 cm wide leaves 33 cm of rug on each side, and a queen bed 153 cm wide leaves 48 cm on each side.
In a living room it can sit in front of a three seat sofa about 2.2 m long, with about 41 cm of rug past each end of the sofa. Under a 240 x 100 cm table for eight it leaves 31 cm at each end and 74.5 cm along each side. A 180 x 90 cm table for six leaves 61 cm at each end and 79.5 cm along each side, so chairs stay on the rug when they are pulled out.
Looking after your dark olive and blue geometric rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
