Handmade Dark Grey Transitional Rug
The Ash Blossom rug is a dark grey transitional rug, handmade in India and measuring 312 x 243 cm. That gives this dark grey transitional rug an area of 7.6 square metres, which covers the middle of a big living room.
The design up close
The ground is a dark charcoal grey with a soft, slightly streaky tone, and over it runs a fine floral pattern in pale blue-grey, cream, aqua, lilac pink, apricot and rust. Rosette-shaped flower heads sit in staggered rows, joined by thin stems and small leaves. The cool pale blues dominate the middle of the field, so from across a room the rug reads as grey with a light blue bloom.
Warmer colour collects in patches. Rust, salmon and apricot flower heads gather towards the top and down the left side, while the right side stays cooler. That shift gives the pattern a faded, uneven look, which suits a transitional rug where the drawing is traditional and the colouring is modern.
A wide border of scrolling leaves frames the field, with rust and pink leaf forms along the top and aqua and apricot elsewhere. Narrow bands of curled scrolls and small flowers run inside and outside it. The long edges are finished in a neat grey band, and a cream fringe runs across each end.
Indian weaving and this rug
India has a long rug weaving tradition, with centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. This one is handmade in India, and it sits in the transitional group, with a classical layout in modern colours.
How this dark grey transitional rug is made
This rug is handmade in India. Handmade means people made it at a loom rather than a machine, so small differences in drawing and colour from one part of the rug to the next are normal and are part of what you are buying.
The pile is short, dense and cut level. A short pile keeps the pattern crisp, so the pale flower heads stand out clearly against the dark ground. Among contemporary style rugs it suits plain walls and simple furniture.
Sizing it for your room
At 312 x 243 cm, this rug is large enough for most main living rooms and open-plan spaces. Under a queen bed, which is about 153 cm wide, it leaves 45 cm each side, and under a king bed, about 183 cm wide, it leaves 30 cm each side.
Its 312 cm length also suits a three-seat sofa about 2.2 m long, which leaves 46 cm of rug beyond each end of the sofa. Under a six-seat dining table, 180 x 90 cm, it leaves 66 cm beyond the table ends and 76.5 cm along each side. Pulled-out chairs need at least 60 cm, so they stay on the rug.
Looking after your dark grey transitional rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile.
