Dark Grey Abstract Rug
This dark grey abstract rug is a bamboo silk piece made in India, measuring 419 x 298 cm. Its ground is a mid grey with blue grey and sea green tints, and charcoal patches sit within it, so the dark grey abstract rug is darkest in spots.
The design up close
Patches of charcoal and dark navy grey run down the upper left and sit low on the left, with brown charcoal blotches near the bottom. Cream and ivory flecks cluster in the upper middle and across the mid left, where the pattern breaks into small specks. Sea green and blue grey tints run down both sides, and a mauve grey fills much of the middle. Where the mauve grey is palest, the weave shows a fine, streaked texture.
Fine streaks run through the whole field, and in places they catch the light with a soft sheen. The lower right has a dark slate band with lighter streaks above it, and the bottom edge thins to a pale grey strip. The darkest patch sits at the bottom centre, where the brown charcoal forms a horizontal shape. The dark grey abstract rug has no border, so the marks run to every edge.
Indian weaving and bamboo silk
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes.
Bamboo silk is a viscose (rayon) fibre made from bamboo cellulose, with a silk-like sheen. It is softer and less resilient than wool, so it suits lower-traffic rooms. Our records note vegetable dyes.
Where a dark grey abstract rug suits
Grey and charcoal sit well with pale timber, white walls and concrete floors. The cream flecks lift the darker areas, and pale timber or grey linen brings them out. The rug works with plain grey or blue furnishings, and blue cushions pick up the sea green tints. A living room or bedroom suits a rug like this better than a busy hallway.
Sizing it for your room
At 419 x 298 cm the dark grey abstract rug covers about 12.5 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves roughly 100 cm of rug showing past each end, and armchairs facing it can rest their front legs on the rug. In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm leaves roughly 90 cm at each end and 99 cm along each side. A rug this length suits a room with a sofa and two chairs grouped around it.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. Rubbing spills can dull bamboo silk, which needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Lift the furniture now and then so the rug does not sit in one spot for long.
