Cream Peacock Feather Rug
This cream peacock feather rug was hand knotted in India in wool, and it measures 302 x 250 cm. A pale cream ground carries a dense field of flowering medallions in blue, rust, red and teal, with large fan-shaped peacock feather motifs near the left and right edges. Our records note vegetable dyes.
The design up close
Round medallions sit in staggered rows across the whole field. Some are pale cream with blue centres, others are deep blue or teal with a ring of small red flowers, and thin cream vines link each one to its neighbours. On this cream peacock feather rug the effect is a garden of blooms rather than separate blocks of pattern.
The peacock feather motifs are the most striking part of the design. Near the left edge a fan of rust and red petals opens above a smaller blue fan. On the right side a broad orange and blue fan sits near the middle, with another below it in teal and navy. Smaller blue and rust blossoms fill the gaps, so the pattern stays busy from edge to edge.
Teal and deep green forms sit along the lower edge near the centre, and the top of the field is dotted with small blue flowers. A fine fringe finishes the bottom edge.
Indian rugs and their weaving
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Our Indian rugs lean towards contemporary and designer pieces, alongside classic patterns. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes.
How the knots are tied
Weavers tie every knot by hand on a loom, row after row, then shear the pile level. Turn this cream peacock feather rug over and the design shows on the back too, with the small irregularities that hand knotting leaves. Wool gives the pile a soft hand, and it is the fibre the care advice below is written for.
Sizing a cream peacock feather rug for your room
At 302 x 250 cm the rug covers about 7.6 square metres. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves about 41 cm of rug showing past each end, so the sofa’s front legs rest on the rug. In a dining room, a table of about 180 x 90 cm leaves roughly 61 cm of rug at each end and 80 cm along each side, enough for chairs to slide back. This cream peacock feather rug suits dark timber floors and grey or blue furnishings.
Looking after your cream peacock feather rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
