Cream Neutral Kashan Rug
This cream neutral Kashan rug is a Persian rug, hand knotted in Iran from lamb wool, and it measures 361 x 260 cm. Its ivory field and olive-green surround keep the palette muted, so the cream neutral Kashan rug suits a calm, pale room.
The design up close
A lobed panel of ivory fills most of the rug. Across it, fine vines carry small flowers and leaves in blue, grey-blue, olive and tan, spreading evenly from the centre. At the middle, a rosette medallion in grey-green and blue, with a rose-brown heart, sits on the ivory, and small pendant motifs hang above and below it. The pattern is closely drawn, so the vines read as one flowing network across the ivory.
The ivory field is surrounded by olive-green ground covered with the same floral scrolls, framed by a cream band with a scroll pattern. The outer border is olive too, with small blue and cream flowers repeated along its length. The olive ground sits behind the floral scrolls, so the outer border reads as a calm band that frames the brighter ivory. The cream neutral Kashan rug stays soft in colour from the centre to the outer edge.
Kashan and its rugs
Kashan, in central Iran, lies between Tehran and Isfahan, and its workshops were famous by the 16th and 17th centuries. Many Kashans use deep reds and navy blues, with curving floral borders and a graceful central medallion. This cream neutral Kashan rug keeps the classic layout of a central medallion in a field of flowers and vines, but in ivory and olive instead of deeper colours.
How this cream neutral Kashan rug is made
Every knot is tied by hand, and the pile is lamb wool. Our records note vegetable dyes. Kashan rugs are usually finely knotted with the asymmetrical (Persian) knot on a cotton foundation, which gives a short, dense pile that shows the small flowers clearly. The fine flower detail on this piece shows that clearly.
Sizing it for your room
At 361 x 260 cm the cream neutral Kashan rug covers about 9.4 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 70 cm of rug showing past each end, so the front legs of a sofa and armchairs can rest on it. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves roughly 60 cm at each end and 80 cm along each side. The ivory and olive suit pale timber, white walls and soft blue or grey furnishings.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
