Blue Sage Bamboo Silk Rug
This blue sage bamboo silk rug is made in India from pure bamboo silk and measures 350 x 250 cm. Its field mixes dusky slate blue with sage grey, taupe and cream, and pale patches break up the colour across the surface.
The design up close
The blue sage bamboo silk rug is patterned with small geometric marks repeated in bands across the field. Zigzags, stepped hooks, small diamonds and dotted rows sit in horizontal stripes, most clearly near the top and across the middle. Between the bands the ground looks brushed and streaked, with darker slate in vertical runs and lighter sage in patches. The bands sit closer together near the top, so that section looks busier than the lower half.
Dusky blue dominates the left side and the top, while the centre and right side lean toward sage and taupe. Pale cream patches sit in the middle and lighten the ground, so the slate blue never overpowers it. There is no central medallion, so the pattern runs evenly across the whole rug. Across the middle the bands run in long, even rows, and the pattern stays clear from a few metres away.
Indian rugs and their weaving centres
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century, and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area is the largest carpet-making region in India. Indian workshops weave many contemporary and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. This blue sage bamboo silk rug belongs to that contemporary group.
About the bamboo silk
This blue sage bamboo silk rug is made from pure bamboo silk. Bamboo silk is a viscose (rayon) fibre made from bamboo cellulose, with a silk-like sheen. It looks beautiful but is softer and less resilient than wool, so it suits lower-traffic rooms such as a bedroom or a quiet sitting room.
Sizing this blue sage bamboo silk rug
At 350 x 250 cm the rug covers about 8.8 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 65 cm of rug showing past each end, so the whole sofa and a coffee table can sit on it. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves roughly 55 cm at each end and 75 cm along each side. This blue and sage rug suits white or pale grey walls, timber floors and neutral furnishings.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. Rubbing spills can dull bamboo silk, so when it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand and handles that fibre with care.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
