Charcoal Pebble Textured Rug
This charcoal pebble textured rug is handmade in India in wool and measures 230 x 160 cm, or about 3.7 square metres. Its charcoal ground is covered in cream and grey circles of many sizes, which read like pebbles on a dark beach.
The design up close
The whole field of this charcoal pebble textured rug is covered evenly, with no border and no centre motif. Rounded cream shapes sit close together and are separated by thin channels of charcoal, so the ground shows between them.
The circles range from small to fairly large, and tiny square dots sit between some of them. The spacing shifts slightly across the rug, so the pattern never settles into a neat grid. Some circles sit slightly apart from the rest, which leaves small pockets of charcoal open around them.
From a distance this charcoal pebble textured rug reads as a soft, mottled grey. Up close the individual circles show, and the texture gives the surface some depth without any strong colour.
Where the rug is woven
India has a long rug weaving tradition, with centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Agra has been a weaving centre since at least the 17th century, and Bhadohi and Mirzapur is the largest rug making region in India. Indian workshops weave many contemporary designs, often to order and in a wide range of colours and sizes, and this rug belongs to that contemporary group.
How a charcoal pebble textured rug is made
This charcoal pebble textured rug was handmade in India, and its fibre is wool. Our records note vegetable dyes, and the charcoal shifts a little in tone from one area to another.
Hand work means the circles are not identical in size or shape, and the edges of each one soften slightly. That variation is what gives the pattern its pebbled look.
Sizing it for your room
At 230 x 160 cm this charcoal pebble textured rug covers about 3.7 square metres. Because it is 2.3 m long, it suits a coffee table setting, where the front legs of a sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around the table.
Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, which seats six, it leaves roughly 25 cm at each end and 35 cm along each side. Its dark ground suits pale timber and cream walls, where the cream circles show best. Lighter and darker circles are scattered at random across the rug, so no single area looks like another. Place it where daylight reaches it, so the cream and charcoal read as two clear tones.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not catch the surface. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the surface. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
