Handmade Camel and Olive Grass Rug
The Tussock rug is a camel and olive grass rug, handmade in India from wool and measuring 302 x 250 cm. That is about 7.6 square metres of floor.
The design up close
Camel, olive, brown and charcoal strands run in fine lines across the width of this camel and olive grass rug, giving it the ribbed, streaked look of dry grass. Small flecks of ivory and the odd thread of rust and soft green are mixed through.
A lighter band of pale camel and ivory crosses the middle of the rug, fading into darker olive and charcoal towards both ends. Over all of it runs a fine ivory lattice of small triangles and diamonds, which shows clearly in the darker parts and almost disappears in the pale centre.
There is no border, and the pattern runs right to the edges. The earthy colours sit easily with timber floors, leather, linen and plants, and the light centre keeps the rug from feeling heavy in a big room.
Indian weaving and this rug
India has a long rug weaving tradition, with centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. Wool is the most common pile, and some rugs mix wool with other fibres.
How this camel and olive grass rug is made
This modern rug is handmade from wool. Wool is hard wearing and springy, and its matte finish suits the dry, natural tones here. It recovers well after furniture is moved, which helps in a busy living room.
Up close the pile has a chunky, nubbly texture, and each row mixes several shades, so the colour changes slightly wherever you look. That makes it forgiving with dust and daily wear, and it gives a plain room some depth without adding a loud pattern. It works as a wool rug for family rooms as well as quieter spaces.
Sizing it for your room
This camel and olive grass rug suits a large living room or a main bedroom. In a bedroom, a queen bed (153 cm wide) set across the 250 cm width leaves 48.5 cm of rug each side, and a king bed (183 cm) leaves 33.5 cm each side, enough to step onto something soft in the morning.
In a living room, a three seat sofa of about 2.2 m placed along the 302 cm length leaves about 41 cm at each end. Under a dining table, a 180 x 90 cm table for six leaves 61 cm at each end and 80 cm along each side, so chairs can stay on the rug when pulled out a little. A 240 x 100 cm table for eight leaves 31 cm at each end and 75 cm along each side.
Looking after your camel and olive grass rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
