Handmade Brown and Grey Grass Rug
The Cedar Bark rug is a brown and grey grass rug, handmade in India from wool and silk and measuring 429 x 305 cm. That gives you 13.1 square metres of floor, enough for a big living or dining area.
The design up close
A brown ground carries a grey design. From above, the rug reads as soft bands that shift from deep brown to pale grey and back again. A few narrow stripes of fine dotted texture pick out the lighter areas.
Come closer, or crouch down to floor level, and the pattern appears. Small checks in rust brown and grey blue form rows of tiny dots. Between them sit narrow chevron bands like rows of fine arrows, straight broken lines in short dashes, and a few small diamonds. Some bands are mostly pale grey with brown flecks, others warm brown with grey flecks.
The pile has a sheen that moves with the light. With light across the surface the grey bands brighten and the checks stand out. A white fringe finishes both ends.
Indian weaving and this rug
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. Wool is the most common pile, and some rugs mix wool with silk, which is the case here. This one is a contemporary design built from tone on tone colour and fine texture.
How this brown and grey grass rug is made
This brown and grey grass rug is handmade in India from wool and silk. The wool shows in the matte brown areas. The silk shows up as the shinier threads inside the pattern, where it picks up light that the wool does not.
That mix is why the surface changes as you walk past it. The checks and chevrons are easy to read from a low angle and quieter from above. The grey areas move more with the light than the brown ones do.
Sizing it for your room
At 429 x 305 cm, this brown and grey grass rug is a big piece. Under a dining table of 240 x 100 cm that seats eight, it leaves 94.5 cm beyond each end of the table and 102.5 cm along each side, so chairs can be pulled out and still stand on the rug.
In a living room, a 3-seat sofa about 2.2 m long placed along the length leaves 104.5 cm of rug at each end. Under a king bed 183 cm wide, there is 61 cm on each side.
Looking after your brown and grey grass rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
Rubbing spills can dull silk, so this rug needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand.
