Blue Vase Design Rug
This blue vase design rug was made in India in wool and measures 237 x 162 cm, about 3.8 square metres. Slate blue fills the ground, and cream and chocolate brown vase shapes stand in columns down the field, with leafy scrolls spreading between them.
The design of this blue vase design rug
A column of vase shapes runs down the centre of the rug, with smaller vases in columns on either side. Each vase is drawn in cream with tan and brown shading, and the spaces between them are filled with curling tendrils and small leaves. The motifs are arranged in repeating rows, so the eye follows each column down toward the fringe at either end.
The ground is a slate blue with fine streaks of lighter blue-grey running across it. Pale blue flecks sit among the leaves in places, so the ground never looks flat. From across a room the motifs blend into a soft, even pattern, and up close each vase and scroll stands out clearly.
This blue vase design rug runs its pattern right to the edges, with a fine fringe at both short ends. The cream motifs carry most of the light, and the brown shading gives them depth against the blue, so the design holds together even where the scrolls are close.
Where it is made
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century, and Bhadohi and Mirzapur is the largest carpet-making region in India.
Indian workshops weave many modern designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. Indian rugs in our collection lean towards contemporary and designer pieces, and this blue vase design rug fits that range.
Wool in the pile
The title names wool, and wool is the most common pile in Indian rugs. The rug is made in wool, so the care advice below applies to the whole surface, including the shaded brown areas.
Ask us about the materials of any rug you are considering when you visit, and we will answer from the rug itself.
Sizing it for your room
At 237 x 162 cm this blue vase design rug covers about 3.8 square metres, which is a little short for a three-seat sofa to sit fully on. Instead, the front legs of a sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table.
In a dining room, a table of about 180 x 90 cm leaves about 28 cm of rug at each end and about 36 cm along each side, which suits a six-seat table. The blue ground works well with cream walls and pale timber floors.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the surface. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
