Blue Sarasari Persian Rug
This Blue Sarasari Persian Rug is a hand-knotted piece from Iran, measuring 350 x 253 cm, or about 8.9 square metres. Its field is a deep navy, covered from edge to edge with a fine floral vine pattern in cream, pale yellow and grey blue, inside a pale yellow green border.
The design up close
No medallion breaks up the field. Scrolling vines run across the navy ground in every direction, and flower heads in cream, pale yellow and light blue sit along them. The flowers are spaced evenly, so the pattern reads as one continuous texture from the centre of the rug out to the edges.
Some of the flower heads carry a second ring of petals in a paler tone, which gives them depth against the navy. Smaller leaves and tendrils fill the gaps between the larger blooms, so no part of the ground is left plain. On this Blue Sarasari Persian Rug the light flowers stand out sharply against the dark ground, and the eye follows the vines from one end to the other.
The border of this Blue Sarasari Persian Rug is a band of pale yellow green with small repeated rosettes set in a row. A narrow guard line separates it from the field, so the vines stop cleanly at the edge. The navy ground keeps the light flowers crisp, and the whole rug reads as a deep, settled piece.
Kashan and its rugs
Kashan, in central Iran, is one of the great names in Persian weaving. Kashan rugs are admired for their deep reds and navy blues, curving floral borders and a graceful central medallion. This rug uses the navy ground and flowering vines of the Kashan style, but it has no central medallion, so the whole field carries the pattern.
Kashan lies between Tehran and Isfahan, and its workshops were famous by the 16th and 17th centuries, when Persian court carpets reached their height.
How this Blue Sarasari Persian Rug is made
Each knot is tied by hand on a loom, and the pile is sheared level once the rows are complete. Our records note very fine Persian knots on a cotton foundation. The pile is wool.
Turn the rug over and the design shows on the back, with the small irregularities that hand knotting leaves.
Sizing this Blue Sarasari Persian Rug
At 350 x 253 cm, this blue sarasari Persian rug covers about 8.9 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m sits with about 65 cm of rug beyond each end, so the front legs of the sofa and of armchairs can rest on the rug in a living room.
For a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, which seats eight, the rug leaves about 55 cm at each end and about 77 cm along each side. The navy ground sits well with timber floors and light walls.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
