Blue Sarasari Kashan Rug
This Blue Sarasari Kashan Rug is a hand-knotted piece from Iran, measuring 400 x 308 cm, or about 12.3 square metres. Its field is a pale blue grey, covered with small flowers and fine vines, inside a wide border of grey blue and sage green.
The design up close
The field is an all over pattern, with no central medallion standing out. Small flower heads in grey blue and white sit between thin curling vines, with a few touches of gold scattered through the ground. The spacing is even from one end of this Blue Sarasari Kashan Rug to the other, so the design reads as one fine texture.
A narrow band of small repeated motifs separates the field from the wider border. The border itself is grey blue and sage green, with rows of small rosettes and larger flower heads repeating along its length. Fine guard lines run between the bands, so each border stays distinct from the next.
Because the flowers are light and the ground is pale, the pattern sits lightly on the rug rather than standing out in bold shapes. The sage in the border brings the edges forward a little, and the centre keeps a soft, even tone.
How this Blue Sarasari Kashan Rug is made
Each knot is tied by hand on a loom, and the pile is sheared level once the rows are complete. Our records note very fine Persian knots on a cotton foundation. The pile is wool, and the small flowers are built up one row at a time.
Turn the rug over and the design shows on the back, with the small irregularities that hand knotting leaves. The field is worked in many small flower forms, so the knotting has to stay even for the pattern to read clearly from the front.
Sizing this Blue Sarasari Kashan Rug
At 400 x 308 cm, this Blue Sarasari Kashan Rug suits a large living room or dining room and covers about 12.3 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m sits with about 90 cm of rug beyond each end, so the front legs of the sofa and of armchairs set facing it can rest on the rug.
For a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, which seats eight, the rug leaves about 80 cm at each end and about 104 cm along each side. The pale blue grey field works with light timber and white or grey walls, and the sage border keeps the room calm.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
