Blue Grey Marble Rainbow Rug
This blue grey marble rainbow rug is a hand double knotted rug from India, made from wool and measuring 428 x 314 cm. Its blues, greys and off-white run across the rug in soft horizontal bands, with small flecks of brown. At about 13.4 square metres it is a large rug for a living room or open-plan space.
The design of this blue grey marble rainbow rug
The rug is built in bands. Wider blue-grey bands are flecked with darker blue and brown, and they look mottled rather than solid. Between them run narrower off-white bands, where a fine diamond lattice shows as a small, regular texture. The mixed tones give the rug the look of marble, as the name suggests.
The edges are plain and finished with a short fringe at the top and bottom. Because the tones shift from band to band, the rug reads as one layered surface in several tones.
Indian rugs and their weaving
Indian hand knotted rugs have a long tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century, and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area is the largest carpet-making region in India.
Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. This rug belongs to that contemporary side of the tradition, with a banded design and no central motif.
How it is made
This blue grey marble rainbow rug is hand double knotted from wool. Each knot is tied by hand, and the bands are worked into the pile row by row, so the lighter and darker stripes sit where the design places them.
Sizing it for your room
At 428 x 314 cm this blue grey marble rainbow rug covers about 13.4 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 104 cm of rug showing past each end. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, which seats eight, the rug leaves roughly 94 cm at each end and 107 cm along each side.
The blue and grey suit rooms with pale walls and timber floors, and the off-white bands pick up light from windows and keep a large floor from looking dark. A rug this large anchors a living room, so its blue and grey can set the palette for the rest of the furnishings.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
Because this blue grey marble rainbow rug is large, vacuum it in sections, working across the bands so the pile lies evenly.
