Blue Cream Contemporary Rug
This blue cream contemporary rug is hand knotted in wool and was made in India. It measures 416 x 299 cm, about 12.4 square metres, and carries a fine all-over scroll pattern in blue-grey on a cream ground.
The design of this blue cream contemporary rug
The field is one repeating motif of scrolls, set in staggered rows so each row sits between the ones above and below. Each motif combines a tight spiral with a fan of leaves in pale steel blue, and the spirals curl outward into the space between them. Some rows look darker than others, which gives this blue cream contemporary rug a faint banded rhythm.
The ground is cream, with a soft grey tone in places. The motifs are blue-grey with lighter highlights, and the fine lines of the scrolls stand out against the pale field. There is no border or central medallion, so the repeat runs to the edges, with a fringe at each short end.
From across a room the motifs blend into a soft, even texture, and up close each scroll stands out. The blue and cream palette is restrained, so this blue cream contemporary rug suits a room with pale or grey walls and light timber floors.
Where it is made
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century, and Bhadohi and Mirzapur is the largest carpet-making region in India.
Indian rugs in our collection lean towards contemporary and designer pieces, and Indian workshops weave many modern designs, often to order. Our records note vegetable dyes for this blue cream contemporary rug.
Wool in the pile
The title names soft wool, and wool is the most common pile in Indian rugs. Because the rug is made in wool, the moth advice in the care section below applies to it, especially under furniture where the pile is rarely seen.
Sizing it for your room
At 416 x 299 cm this blue cream contemporary rug covers about 12.4 square metres, enough for a full lounge setting. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves roughly 98 cm of rug showing past each end, so the sofa, two armchairs and a coffee table can all sit on it.
Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves about 88 cm at each end and about 100 cm along each side, which suits an eight-seat table.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the surface. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
