Blue Contemporary Wool Rug
This blue contemporary wool rug was double hand knotted in Agra, India, in handspun New Zealand wool and measures 362 x 276 cm. Its field is a cool slate grey with fine silver and brown grey streaks running across it. At about 10.0 square metres it is a large rug for a formal living room or a dining room.
The design up close
The rug has no motif and no border. Fine horizontal streaks run from top to bottom, and in places small dotted rows of lighter threads sit between them. The colour changes only gradually, from darker grey through lighter silver and back, so the field reads as one soft surface. Nothing in the field breaks the surface, so the eye moves across it evenly.
Towards the top and bottom edges the streaks show a little brown and taupe, and a faint warm tint appears in some bands. A blue contemporary wool rug like this one reads as texture first, and the streaks become clearer as you move closer. Fringe finishes the top and bottom ends.
From across a room the rug looks plain and even, so the texture is the main feature.
Indian rugs and their design
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, and Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century. Indian workshops weave many contemporary designs in a wide range of colours and sizes, and this blue contemporary wool rug follows that modern direction with a texture-led surface.
How a blue contemporary wool rug is made
This rug is double hand knotted, with each knot tied by hand on a loom. Our records note vegetable dyes, and the handspun yarn gives the streaks an irregular, natural look.
Sizing a blue contemporary wool rug in your home
At 362 x 276 cm the rug covers about 10.0 square metres. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, it leaves roughly 61 cm at each end and 88 cm along each side, enough room for chairs to slide back. In a living room, a three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 71 cm of rug showing past each end, so the sofa sits well inside the edge. A two-seat sofa of about 1.6 m leaves roughly 101 cm at each end, which suits a large lounge with a sofa group.
The cool grey field suits timber floors, white walls and neutral or blue furniture. The grey ground makes this rug a neutral base for a room with coloured walls or a bright sofa. Its plain look also suits a study or home office, where a quiet floor keeps attention on the desk and shelves.
Looking after your blue contemporary wool rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
