Blue Cobbled Grass Rug
This blue cobbled grass rug is hand double knotted in India from New Zealand wool, and it measures 258 x 170 cm. Short horizontal strokes of grey blue, slate, olive and sand cover the whole field, with no medallion or separate border. The mix of colours gives it the look of small stones laid in rows, which suits a calm, contemporary room.
The design up close
The field is built from short, broken strokes that run side to side, in grey blue, slate, olive green, sand and pale grey white. Each stroke is small, and together they make a textured surface, a little like grass seen from a short distance.
There is no central medallion and no separate border. The texture runs to the edges of this blue cobbled grass rug, and the rows shift a little in colour from one band to the next, so the rug has a soft movement along its length.
Up close the strokes look like small broken lines, a little like stones or blocks set in rows. From a few steps back they blur into one muted tone.
Indian rugs and their weaving centres
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century, and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area is the largest carpet-making region in India. This is a contemporary piece, and Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes.
How a blue cobbled grass rug is made
Our records note hand double knotting, so each knot was tied by hand on a loom. Wool is the most common pile in Indian carpets, and this one is made from New Zealand wool. The rug measures 258 x 170 cm, so it covers about 4.4 square metres of floor.
Sizing it for your room
The rug covers about 4.4 square metres of floor, and its length suits a sofa and two armchairs. The front legs of the sofa and both armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table.
In a dining room, a table of about 180 x 90 cm for six leaves roughly 39 cm of rug at each end and 40 cm along each side, so the front legs of the chairs stay on the rug. A blue cobbled grass rug this size suits timber floors, pale walls and neutral furniture.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
